Will Mayweather do a "catch me if you can" fight against Pacquiao?
I’m officially a Pacquiao fan after he soundly beat Miguel Cotto last Saturday. I thought Mayweather was the best p4p but after Saturday, wow!
Manny Pacquiao currently is the closest thing to a perfect boxer:
1) lighting speed
2) deadly accuracy
3) knockout power
Many wrestlers have 1 or 2 of the 3 above but only Manny has only 3 of them (correct me if there is another wrestler with all 3 stuff). The only weakness of Manny is his defense but he really doesn’t need defense because like the motto: "the best defense is a good ofense" and that’s exactly what Pacquiao does.
On the other hand Floyd Mayweather has:
1) light speed
2) deadly accuracy
but that’s it, he doesn’t have #3 knockout power. What Mayweather has is the best athletic defense right now and that’s why he could be also the best p4p boxer. Mayweather is like a unicorn, very hard to catch.
So Manny Pacquiao has ALL that is needed to defeat (even knockout) Floyd Mayweather but that if (and is a big IF) he can catch Floyd. So again, do you think do a "catch me if you can" and "merry go round" type of matches against Manny Pacquiao?
P.S. I’m assuming that the match will be made in 2010. I have read that Manny gave the green light to his managers to start negotiating. It will be a matter of money, I think Floyd Mayweather will try to focus on making the most money he can (because I think he thinks he is going to lose, so if in his frame of mind, I lose but I take the most money). Pacquiao will agree to get the least share of the money because he only wants to beat the hell out of Mayweather.
Of course Mayweather would back up the whole fight that would be the style to take care of Manny’s constant attack. But to me this fight is never going to happen anyway Mayweathers never taking a 50/50 split no matter who he is facing. But IF this fight goes down it will most likely happen like this. Mayweather has an inch and a half on Manny in height and his reach is 72" compared to Manny’s 67" so his best bet is to just circle and back up and throw when Manny tries to get inside. There wont be any knockouts because one no ones staying close enough to Mayweather to knock him out and two I don’t think either of them have true knockout power, yea they can string together punches that will knock you out eventually or in a long combo but neither of them poses that one punch knockout strength at any given moment. I kind of don’t see the hype in this fight because its very simple for Mayweather to win in my eyes. Stay back, out point, slip Manny’s straights and he’s good. No matter what Manny’s been doing right now boxing is all politics Manny will have to do way more work to get a win then Mayweather because mayweathers been undefeated his whole career.

I think you do need to add a good defence to your list of things for a perfect boxer and when you put it that way I think Floyd easily has a better defence compared to Pacquiao’s advantage in power so we are back to where we started. Having said that Pacquiao’s defence is decent and he has an excellent chin whereas Mayweather’s has never really been tested. Manny can definitely KO Floyd but he is going to have to catch him first because Mayweather wont make the same mistakes Cotto made. I don’t think there is any truth in you saying that Floyd thinks he will lose. I think both believe they can beat the other and you can make a good case for either.

Yes, that has been Mayweather’s style his entire career. I don’t see him changing his style in a fight with Pacquiao.

Of course Mayweather would be running around trying to outpoint Pacman, he has been doing that his entire career. How much more for someone like Pacman who completely dominated a true Welterweight champion in Cotto, whom Mayweather has been avoiding for years?
Pacquiao definitely has a poor defense if you compare it to Floyd, but the only downside of that against Floyd is that Pac would surely be outpointed. But you can almost be sure that Floyd can never hurt Pacquiao. After taking the best shots from Cotto and feeling nothing from it, Mayweather would seem like a feather fisted fighter like Malinaggi.
